Daraa and Swedia notable figures seek to end discords

Notable figures from Daraa and Sweida provinces met this week seeking to a long-term conciliation following a series of chaotic security condition, kidnapping and skirmishes in southern Syria.

Local activists told Zaman al-Wasl that Monday's meetingin the village of Barad was a continuation of previous meetings that led to the withdrawal of the Eighth Brigade from Al-Quraya village, which witnessed battles on both sides that left dozens of dead and wounded.

The meeting focused on working out unresolved issues to prevent any internal or external parties to influence the mended relationship between the people of the provinces after over ten years of regime attempts to fuel sectarian dissent between them.

A number of notable clerics from the two provinces attended the meeting, including Sheikh Awad Al-Miqdad, Sheikh Abdul Wahhab al-Mahamid, and attorney Abu Ahmad al-Huwaidi, from Daraa, and Luay al-Atrash and Sheikh Hamoud Al-Hinnawi from Swedia.

Last March, violent clashes broke out between the Eighth Brigade and the local factions in Sweida, which were renewed at the end of September, resulting in dozens of dead and wounded.
