Cereal Company denies wheat theft in Latakia Port

Pro-government Sham FM radio has turned into a platform for state officials to deny corruption claims amid deteriorating economic hardships.

The Minister of Agriculture Mohamed Hassan Qatana went on Sham FM to deny his previous suggestion that Syrians should start making their own bread instead of waiting for the state to distribute it to them.

The radio station invited Rabi Marwa, the director of the Cereal Establishment in coastal Latakia province remains the exclusive purchaser of wheat.Syrian Grain Foundation branch in Latakia, to clarify the report published by Al-Baath newspaper that about 500 tons of imported wheat were stolen in the port of Latakia.

Marwa denied the newspaper’s allegations, and explained that the Foundation had an agreement with the supplier company to import 11,500 tons of wheat, of which 11,000 tons arrived, with the corporation receiving the quantity in October and paying for it.

The General Establishment for Cereal Processing and Trade (Hoboob) remains the exclusive purchaser of wheat.

The Director explained that there is an internationally recognized acceptable tolerances to the variations in quantity that applies to both traders and importers, the ‘tolerable negative error’ of less than 1% of the weight. However, the difference in the load exceeded the permissible limit and  they are not able to pay the supplier company for the missing 500 tons.
