(Zaman Alwasl)- Rebels of the embattled Eastern Ghouta near Damascus have broken the siege on al-Mleiha town after 25 days of severe blockade by Syrian regime troops, local council said.
The council says that fighters of Islam Army, Ajnad al-Cham (Levant’s Soldiers) and Nusra Front have participated in the break-siege battle.
At least 700 rebel fighters have been under siege by Bashar al-Assad’s forces for three week before breaking it by a suicide bomb carried by foreign jihadist, Abu Ala’a al-Kuwaiti.
Regime troops in response have pounded al-Meliha by ground-to-ground missiles and aerial bombardment.
For 6 months, Assad’s forces backed by the Lebanese Shia group, Hezbollah has been battling to recapture Mleiha, a strategic rebel bastion.
While the army remains in control of Damascus, rebels still hold a number of towns and villages on the outskirts, despite a suffocating blockade and frequent air strikes and shelling.
Syria's three-year-old conflict began as popular protests against four decades of Assad family rule but changed into armed insurgency under a security force crackdown.
More than 171,000 people killed and over 9million forced to flee their homes.
