Assad regime accuses UK of supporting 'terrorism' in Syria: media

The Assad regime launched an all-out criticism of the UK and its officials, accusing it of supporting “terrorist groups”, obstructing the “reconstruction” process, and applying “illegal coercive measures” targeting the Syrian people and their livelihoods.

The regime’s attack came hours after the statement of the newly appointed UK Special Representative for Syria, Jonathan Hargreaves.

According to the regime’s media, an “official source in the Foreign Ministry” said that the regime is astonished at the “hypocrisy, false allegations and distortion of the facts of the UK representative to Syria Jonathan Hargreaves regarding the humanitarian situation in Syria.

“The British official ignores that the main reason for the people’s current suffering lies in the terrorist aggression that shed the Syrians’ blood and destroyed their achievements, in which Britain was one of its perpetrators through its unlimited support of various terrorist groups. In addition, he disregards the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria by the US and its followers, with the UK at the forefront, which not only affects the Syrians’ lives but also constitutes a flagrant violation of the principles of international humanitarian law and the most basic human rights.”

The source also considers that the UK “has obstructed efforts to combat terrorism and thwarted all serious attempts to overcome the current crisis,” as well as provided “billions to distort the image of Syria and to place obstacles in the way of rebuilding what terrorism has destroyed.”

According to the source, “the UK and its officials have no credibility to talk about the humanitarian situation in Syria, but rather should be held accountable for their crimes and the suffering of its people.”

The new UK special representative to Syria Jonathan Hargreaves inaugurated his duties with a statement about the disastrous situation in Syria, with 13 million Syrians in need of aid this year, two million more than last year.

The regime’s extreme reaction came as a result of Hargreaves’ statement, that the current situation is a “man-made disaster” and that it’s perpetrator—the Assad regime and its supporters—will be held accountable for the atrocities committed against the Syrian people.
