Deir Ezzor: teachers protest SDF mandatory conscription

Syrian teachers in the Kurdish-held areas of Deir Ezzor have protested mandatory conscription in the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), local activists said Monday.

A number of teachers and employees took to the streets of Al-Busayrah town to protest the decision saying that they categorically reject mandatory conscription, and announcing that schools and service departments will be closed until the decision is repealed.

During the protests, teachers and employees in schools and health centers in the towns of Al-Susah, Al-Baghouz, Al-Boubadran, Al-Marashdeh, Al-Araqoub, Al-Safafna and Mawzan threatened to resign if the decision is enforced. Other protests broke out with pupils and parents denouncing the decision of the SDF.

Last week, the leadership of the YPG-led forces distributed hundreds of notices to teachers and employees in the educational departments in Deir Ezzor, demanding that they join the ranks of the “Defense and Self-Protection Forces.
