Municipal workers in the semi-autonomous Kurdish city of Irbil mounted a clean-up operation Tuesday after a barrage of rockets landed near an American military base close to the city's international airport.
A contractor working with the US-led coalition was killed in Monday's attack. The contractor was not a US national, a coalition spokesman said.
An unspecified number of Iraqi and Kurdish civilians were also wounded as other rockets hit busy residential areas close to the airport.
A little-known Shiite militant group calling itself Saraya Awliya al-Dam, Arabic for Guardians of Blood Brigade, claimed responsibility.
It was the first such incident since September, raising the prospect of an increase in hostilities between the US-led coalition and extremist groups in Northern Iraq.
