Israelis prepare for March general election

Israel's election authorities are making the final preparations ahead of the March 23 general election, which is expected to be an unusual vote because of coronavirus restrictions.

A rehearsal of how the adjusted process will work was held on Tuesday in the central Israeli town of Shoham.

Voters will be able to vote without leaving their cars at drive-in sites, where election staff will be bringing voting booths to the side of voters' vehicles.

It will be an "easy and fast process" that allows for social distancing, said Yosi Toren, head of the elections logistics center.

Arrangements will also be made to allow hospitalized coronavirus patients take part in the upcoming election, he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pinning his re-election hopes on the success of his campaign to vaccinate Israel's adult population.

Israel has run the world's fastest vaccination campaign, administering at least one dose to more than half its 9.3 million people and the required two doses to about a third in less than two months.
