Qamishli: Asayish hands over bodies of pro-regime fighters to Russia

Kurdish security forces on Saturday have handed over the Russian military police 3 bodies of pro-regime National Defense militia who were killed in the past 72 hours clashes in Qamishli city, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

The calm in the northeastern city followed a Russian-brokered ceasefire in the Tai neighborhood between the National Defense and the Asayish.

The agreement reached on Wednesday night stipulated a complete ceasefire and the withdrawal of fighters from the streets along with Russian patrols in the city’s streets, the sources said.

“Kurdish elements tried to advance with an armored vehicle towards the al-Tai neighborhood in the city and put concrete barriers before the arrival of Russian forces,” said Mohammed al-Taei, a National Defense Forces member.

Kurdish security forces said Wednesday that regime-allied fighters killed one of their personnel in an overnight attack on a checkpoint in Qamishli, of which both groups share control.

The fighting began when the National Defense Forces attacked the position manned by the Kurdish security forces in the city.

The Asayish, said one of their own died after sustaining wounds in the fighting late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish National Council (ENKS) in a statement late Friday said that days of clashes between the Asayish and National Defense Forces (NDF) in Qamishli’s al-Tai neighborhood have put the civilian population at risk, according to Kuridish RUDAW news site.

“Thousands of families were displaced from the neighborhood to safer places, said ENKS.
