A well-informed source told Zaman al-Wasl that the Israeli warplanes and warships on Wedensday had hit five targets simultaneously, using smart weapons of long-range and high-precision missiles on five locations in coastal Latakia and northwestern Hama provinces.
The sites that were directly targeted are (Al-Samiya warehouses, Qaysiya warehouses, workshops were targeted in Al-Islah area) in the Haffeh region north of Latakia, the military source said.
Also, in the Ras Shamra area, a site south of the port of Al-Bayda, the warehouse of the engineering branch of the naval forces, and a warehouse of naval warships were targeted.
The strikes caused severe damage to the targeted sites. One person was killed and six more wounded, Syrian state media reported.
It was the first Israeli attack on Syria since a missile fired by Damascus struck deep inside Israel two weeks ago.
The source added that the targeted sites in Lattakia included the Air Defense Brigade in the Al-Yahudiya district. The Communications Node 516 and the 510 Engineering Brigade of the Engineering Department were targeted in The al-Hanadi district south of Latakia.
The Israeli jets hit the missile factory in the Scientific Research Institute in Masyaf town west of Hama.
All the targets that were destroyed around Latakia belong to the Syrian Navy, which is being targeted for the first time by Israel.
Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked military targets in Syria over the years but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations.
Israel views Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier as a red line, and it has repeatedly struck Iran-linked facilities and weapons convoys destined for Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group.
The missile attack at dawn Wednesday occurred nearly two weeks after Israel’s military said a Syrian missile that reached deep into Israeli territory and set off air raid sirens near the country’s top-secret nuclear reactor was the result of a misfire and not a deliberate attack.
The missile landed in southern Israel on April 22, prompting Israel to respond with airstrikes on the missile launcher and other targets in Syria.
