Iran denies sending Syria mercenaries to Yemen

The Iranian embassy in Ankara on Sunday dismissed a Turkish media report claiming Tehran had sent some of its forces in Syria to fight alongside the Houthi group in Yemen, the Fars News Agency reported.

"Such a claim indicates lack of information about field realities," the embassy wrote on Twitter. "This unreal claim runs counter to the Islamic Republic of Iran's approach to the catastrophic and inhumane war against the Yemeni people," it added.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has always called for an end to this war [against Yemen] and has supported the UN efforts to find a political solution [to the crisis]," it added.

On Friday, Turkey's Anadolu news agency quoted "informed sources" as saying that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps was paying 120 Syrian militants from Deir Ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria to fight alongside the Houthis.
