At least 10O COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Syria’s last rebel-held enclave on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections to 22,828, Early Warning Network said Tuesday.
Infections have risen in northwestern Syria, portending a new surge. Over 22,800 infections and over 666 deaths have been recorded in northwestern Syria and about 20,500 have been recovered.
The total number of infections recorded from May 1 to 23 of it was 777, as the following regions and districts recorded the highest rates of infection: Al-Bab 223, Afrin 170, Azaz 98, and Harem 82, and 65 in Idlib city, accordign to the Frist Response Team.
In April, rebel-held areas received its first batch of COVID-19 vaccines, with a refrigerated truck offloading over 50,000 United Nations-secured jabs in the overcrowded province.
The rebel-held region, home to 4 million people, is seeing a new rise in infections. The area houses over 2 million displaced persons who live in tent camps and temporary housing. While fighting has largely subsided, occasional military operations still violate a cease-fire that has been in place since March 2020.
