Assad army launches major campaign to track ISIS fighters in Badia desert

A major military campaign launched Sunday by the Russian-backed 25th Special Tasks Division to track ISIS fighters in the Badia desert.

Sources told Zaman al-Wasl that the 25th Division, led by Brig. Gen Suhail al-Hassan, has mobilised more than 1,500 forces in the Khanasir-Athria desert east of Hama province.

The 25th Division destroyed several caves that were used by ISIS as hideouts in the vast Badia desert. Two ISIS fighters were killed in the attack.

Daesh fighters have ramped up their attacks in the past months against regime forces and allied militias.

At least ten regime forces were killed and wounded on Sunday morning in clashes  with ISIS in the southwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor province.

Also, two militants of the Palestinian Al-Quds Brigade were also killed when an explosive device exploded in a military vehicle near the town of Ma'dan, east of Raqqa city.

During the past 48 hours, Russian warplanes launched more than 120 air strikes with high-explosive missiles, targeting more than 17 ISIS positions in the Badia desert.

Russia has gripped its power on most regime-held areas since 2015, taking presence in Badia where the Islamic State militants are still controlling pockets through Homs province and eastwards to the Iraqi border, and continue to carry out deadly attacks against regime forces and allied Iranian militias.
