Malta arrests 150 Syrians try to reach Europe: source


(Zaman Alwasl)- At least 150 Syrians have been arrested by Maltese authorities, claimed to be Illegal immigrants who were trying to reach Europe, source told Zaman Alwasl on Sunday.

Detained families have appealed to the Syrian opposition's National Coalition to interfere, saying some detainees were beaten and insulted by Maltese coast guards.

The number of illegal Syrian migrants reaching Europe’s border has jumped sharply in the three-year conflict.

Hundreds of Syrians have been drawn last months, including women and children, in sea crossings aboard overcrowded and sub-standard vessels.

Syrians accounted for almost a quarter of last year’s total - 25,546 - with Eritreans (11,298), Afghans (9,021) and Albanians (9,500) making up the main other nationalities, according to the Telegraph.
