Jordan: 6-year-old refugee girl sees light for the first time

A Syrian refugee girl saw the light for the first time since her birth 6 years ago, with the efforts of a Kuwaiti medical team as part of a program to help Syrian refugee families in Jordan, a Kuwaiti daily reported Thursday.

The Al-Wasat newspaper quoted the Kuwaiti Red Crescent as saying that Serena was born with cataracts in the eye where her family was not able to afford her treatment.

After the operation, the Kuwaiti Red Crescent posted a video on its Instagram account showing the girl from the hospital, saying: ‘’We went to the light, for the first time in her life she sees things as we see them after the process of removing the cataract from the eye that has been with her since her birth.’’

The video went viral on social media, with comments praising the success of the operation and the efficiency of the supervising doctors.

The Kuwaiti Red Crescent had launched a medical program to perform more than 90 precise and simple surgeries over a period of three days, with the participation of a team of Kuwaiti consultants in various specialties in cooperation with the Jordan Specialized Hospital and in coordination with the Jordanian Red Crescent.

The Syrian conflict has claimed 494,438 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
