German prosecutors demand strict sentence for woman joined ISIS

The German Federal Prosecutor's Office in the Hamburg court to ordered imprison Stephanie.A, 44, a former fighter in ISIS ranks, for 7 and a half years, accusing her of "belonging to a terrorist organization."

According to the German Bild newspaper, a representative of the German Federal Prosecutor said (Stephanie.A) from the German city of Bad Oldesloe was convicted of two charges, the first is belonging to a terrorist organization abroad by joining the Islamic militia (Jund al-Aqsa) and ISIS in Syria in 2016.

Stephanie. A was able to travel to the war zone to fight with the Islamic State in 2016, and took her 14-year-old son, Malik, with her, where she left him to ISIS training camps at the age of 15. Malik was killed in a missile attack on February 23, 2018.

It is also believed that the father of Malik, of Palestinian origin, went to Syria as an ISIS fighter in 2015.

The newspaper notes that "Stephanie" sent a letter to her eldest son in Germany, talking comfortably about the "martyrdom" of his younger brother and that his brother is now in heaven, although the defense lawyer explained that she meant that he had moved to a better place.

The letter pushed the federal attorney general to accuse her of violating her duty of care and education, and negligent homicide, the Bild reported.

The parents surrendered to the Kurdish forces near the Iraqi border in February 2019. The man was put in prison, and the woman, who was in a camp, managed to escape to Turkey at the beginning of the year 2021, according to the Federal Prosecutor.

ISIS, which declared a caliphate straddling parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014, has lost all the territory that was under its control in 2019.

The Syrian conflict has claimed 500,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
