Four displaced families leave desert Rukban camp

Three families and four men left the desert Rukban camp, at the Syria-Jordan border in the eastern countryside of Homs province, the head of the Palmyra and Syrian Badia Tribes Council said Friday

The camp, which is located within the 55 km Area at the border triangle between Jordan, Iraq and Syria, is a home for 3500 IDPs who suffer siege and extreme lack in aid and services.

Maher al-Ali told Zaman al-Wasl that the families entered the regime-held areas on Thursday, escaping the poor living conditions inside the camp due to the siege imposed by the regime forces, Russia and Iranian militias.

Al-Ali confirmed that the only bakery in the Rukban camp was closed due to the lack of flour as the local merchants were not allowed to bring flour to the camp and the 55-km Area for a month.

He pointed out that the number of Rukban camp residents decreased to 3,500 people, due to the poor services and living conditions in the camp, pointing out that the situation of the people in the area is "very dire."

The tribal figure noted that the interruption of flour led to the price of a bundle of bread twice as high as the previous price, as the price of a bundle of bread reached 2,000 SP (About 50 US cents), stressing that those who remained inside the Rukban camp are from the very poor class, and humanitarian and international organizations must move immediately to save those who remain in the Rukban camp. They remain, so that they do not have to leave the camp to regime-controlled areas, which could expose the families to arrest without any security guarantees.

The list of some basic materials prices in the camp, shows rocket-high increase: A bag of sugar is 190,000 SP, a bag of flour costs 150,000 SP, large oil costs 30000, 1 liter of cooking oil costs 20000 SP,  1 kg rice 5000, 1 kg of meat costs 27,000 SP, a baby napkin bag for 75,000, a carton of baby milk for 25000, a liter of diesel for 5000, and a liter Gasoline is 6000 SP, and the cooking gas cylinder is 175000 SP.

The Syrian revolution that turned into a bloody conflict has claimed 500,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.

($1 dollar is trading for 3900 SP)
