10 killed in separate assassinations in Daraa within 48 hours

At least ten assassinations reported in southern Daraa proivcne in the past 48 hours, targeting civilians and former rebels, days after the regime made new appointments within the police command and some security branches.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter said that the doctor, Thaer Ziyad al-Balkhi, is one of the victims who died on Tuesday, when an explosive device planted in his car exploded in the town of Mahaja, north of Daraa city, noting that the victim is one of the last operating doctors in the town.

This came a few days after the regime made security moves, including the police command and some security branches, where the Daraa police chief, Brigadier General Dirar al-Dandal, was transferred to Damascus and appointed as an assistant head of the Protection and Guard Department at the Interior Ministry.

Brigadier General "Oqab Saqr Abbas", head of the State Security Branch in Daraa, was transferred to al-Hasakah province, and Brigadier General Bassam Shehadeh was appointed in his place.

In August 2018, a Russian-brokered reconciliation agreement was reached in southern Syria led to the militants handing over their weapons and displacing a number of them to the northern region, but despite this, skirmishes and sporadic military operations are still taking place in the first stronghold of the Syrian revolution.

The Syrian revolution that turned into a bloody conflict has claimed 500,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
