Iraq reopens Al-Qaim border crossing

Iraq has reopened the al-Qaim border crossing with Syria, whereby it has made crossing priority for those who wish to visit the shrines and religious tourism," an Iraqi official said.

The Kurdish Rudaw media network quoted the mayor of the Iraqi city of al-Qaim, Ahmed al-Dulaimi, as saying that "security in al-Qaim district is very stable through the security forces' control of all entrances and exits of the district."

He considered that because of the "preemptive operations carried out by the security units, there is no influence for the elements of the Islamic State group at the present time."

Al-Dulaimi explained that the administrative borders in the al-Qaim district and the border strip are "strongly held by the border guards and the units supporting them," noting that there is "full coordination between the Iraqi border guards and the Syrian border guards."
