Soaring prices hit Palestinians of Daraa refugee camp: monitor

The Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria confirmed that with the advent of the Holy month of Ramadan, prices witnessed an "insane" rise which mounted the suffering of the residents of Daraa camp for Palestinian refugees, who suffer from harsh living conditions and poverty.

The human rights monitoring group said that the high prices of foodstuffs cast a heavy shadow on the camp residents and negatively affected them, especially during the month of Ramadan.

Most of the families in the camp are unable to buy chicken and meat of all kinds, noting that purchases are limited to foodstuffs, cheap items, and basic meals such as rice, bulgur, lentils and potatoes, despite the current high prices.

The AGPS stressed that the camp residents suffer from deteriorating living and service conditions, and the absence of any stable financial resource.

In addition to these difficulties, the spread of unemployment and the low level of per capita income, amid the lack of basic services and the deterioration of the reality of infrastructure, the collapse of the Syrian pound against the dollar, the scarcity of basic materials and the high prices.

The war-torn country suffers piling economic difficulties due to a decade of war that claimed 500,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people.
