Daraa: unknown gunmen attack army bastion, take soldiers captive

Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday attacked a bastion for Syrian regime army in the southern province of Daraa, taking several soldiers captive.

In a video statement, the gunmen confirmed their control of the Ataman town's roundabout, and the capture of a group of Assad's forces and militias, stressing that they were not released without the release of detainees in the regime's prisons.

Atman has an important strategic location because it is the main gateway to the city of Daraa from the north, and it is located near the "Panorama" area, which the regime turned into a military and security barracks.

The Assad regime sent large reinforcements from inside the city of Daraa and from the "Tal Al-Khader" battalion, to regain control of the roundabout located on the old Daraa-Damascus road.

Sources reported that the gunmen left the roundabout after taking the prisoners, considering that their mission "has been completed successfully and achieved its objectives."

In August 2018, a Russian-brokered reconciliation agreement was reached in southern Syria led to the militants handing over their weapons and displacing a number of them to the northern region, but despite this, skirmishes and sporadic military operations are still taking place in the first stronghold of the Syrian revolution.

The Syrian conflict has claimed a half million lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
