2122 violations to Idlib ceasefire recorded in six months: monitor

The Syria Response Coordinators Team confirmed that the violations of the ceasefire agreement by the Syrian regime and Russia in northwest Syria are continuing without any deterrent to stop these attacks, the number of which exceeded 2,122 in six months.

The relief group stressed that the violations also included the raids of the Russian warplanes, and the bombing of the areas north and east of Aleppo by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

A ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey has come into effect in the northwest Idlib province in March 2020.

The International Community must demonstrate a real commitment to protecting civilians amid the continuous violations, the Coordinators team said.

It would also cause the return of more than a million civilians from the areas of displacement and give way to the reconstruction of those areas to ensure the return of the people to them, It added.

In addition to the return of thousands of civilians to Syria from Turkey and other regions, if safety is achieved in those areas, which would ensure the return of the economic wheel and create additional job opportunities commensurate with the safe geographical area.

The  Response Coordinators team added that the ongoing violations coincide with everyone's concern about how to please Russia to enter humanitarian aid across the border for a new year, and to please the Syrian regime with new reconstruction projects, as is happening in several areas, most notably the city of Aleppo, which is under the control of armed foreign militias classified on the lists of international terrorism.

The Team stressed the need to bring humanitarian aid across the border, which should be far from acquiescing to Russia, but in return it stressed on the need to stop those violations that have prevented millions of civilians from returning to their homes.

Northwestern Syria is home to 3.5 million refugees but is controlled by the Turkish-backed opposition factions and by Islamist HTS fighters.

The Syrian revolution that turned into a bloody conflict has claimed 500,000 lives and has displaced 13,2 million people since it erupted in March 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-regime protests.
