The number of asylum applications increased in the regions of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany during the first half of 2022, according to the local Welt newspaper.
The newspaper stated in a report that the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees registered 16,067 applications from December to June, and according to statistics published on Thursday, this is an increase of 5,245, or nearly 49 percent, from the first half of 2021.
The newspaper pointed out that the number of initial applications nationwide rose by about 44 percent to 84,583 compared to the same half of the previous year, with the largest single component counted by the most populous federal state in North Rhine-Westphalia. Every seven initial applications for a birth are for a child born in Germany under the age of one year.
Nationally, most initial applications came from citizens of Syria (24492), followed by Afghanistan (15,093), Iraq (7512) and Turkey (6,217).
"Welt" said the Interior Ministry had requested the return of 163 people in the first half of the year, 25 of them from Syria, 24 from Afghanistan, 18 from North Macedonia, and 15 from Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the total number of people required to leave the country is not yet clear.
