Islamic State attacks regime forces in Raqqa, Deir Ezzor

Islamic State fighters on Sunday have attacked the military sites of the regime forces and the Russian-backed militias in eastern Syria, in conjunction with a heavy Russian airstrike on the desert region.

Informed sources told Zaman al-Wasl that ISIS cells carried out two attacks on the regime forces and the Russian-backed National Defense militia in the badia desert of Jabal al-Bishri in the southwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor and the Rusafa desert in the southwestern countryside of Raqqa, confirming there were deaths and injuries among the regime forces during the two attacks.

The sources added that Russian warplanes carried out air raids on Sunday, targeting caves and pockets taken by ISIS cells as their dens in the Jabal Al-Bishri desert and the Rusafa desert, in addition to other raids targeting the Homs-Raqqa highway within the Syrian Badia.

On Saturday, ISIS announced through the Telegram application that 31 soldiers from the regime forces and the US-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were killed and wounded in 14 operations within what it called "the Levant Province" within a week.

The Syrian conflict - which led to the loss of at least 500,000 lives and displaced more than 13,2 million people -  began in 2011 after the Assad regime brutally cracked down on peaceful pro-democracy protests.
