50 Cholera cases recorded in northwest Syria in 10 days: relief group

A relief group confirmed that the number of recorded cases of the "cholera" epidemic in northwestern Syria is still witnessing an increasing increase, with more than 50 new cases recorded since the beginning of this month.

The IDP camps in the northwestern region, which include more than 1.8 million displaced people, are witnessing a new increase in numbers, with more than 20 injuries within the camps out of the total number recorded since the beginning of November.

In a report, the "Syria Response Coordinators Group" expressed its grave concern about the fate of hundreds of thousands of civilians living in the camps and the continuous increase in the number of casualties.

The response team stressed that the outbreak of infectious diseases such as the Corona virus and cholera in the camps represents a new link that may be the most dangerous in the chain of difficult conditions that camp residents have been experiencing for years.

The very high population density and the overcrowding of the displaced within the camps, along with the lack of hygiene and inappropriate health conditions, pose a great danger to the safety and health of these individuals, in addition to the water scarcity and the inability to secure it from health sources and the high prices they suffer as a result of the crisis. fuels in the region, according to the relief group.

The team urged all humanitarian organizations urgently to ensure prevention, treatment and control of the spread of infectious diseases within the camps, especially with the advent of winter.

At the same time, he called on the international community and international institutions based on humanitarian work in the region to intervene more than the current reality through financial and logistical support for organizations operating in northwestern Syria.

Syria’s uprising turned civil war that started in 2011 has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million. More than 80% of Syrians now live in poverty, leaving much of the population dependent on humanitarian assistance.
