Rainstorms damage 16 IDP camps in northern Syria

The rain and wind storm that struck the northwestern regions of Syria during the past hours caused significant damage to the camps of northwestern Syria.

Suffering doubled due to the fragile structure of the tent floors and the weak resistance of the tents by their cloth nature, especially in the random camps, the deterioration of living conditions and the displaced people’s loss of the basic necessities of life, according to the Syrian Civil Defense Agency.

The relief organization confirmed that its teams responded from midnight on Sunday, December 25 until the morning of Tuesday, December 27, to more than 16 camps in northwestern Syria, some of which were damaged due to heavy rains, including 12 camps in the northern countryside of Aleppo, and 4 camps in Idlib countryside that were damaged on the ground. About 35 tents were partially affected by water leaking into them.

The White Helmets stressed that 3 families in Al-Risala camp in the village of Shamarin in the northern countryside of Aleppo were damaged as a result of rainwater leaking into 6 tents within the camp, and 3 tents were partially damaged in separate camps in Afrin countryside as a result of the rains.

In the eastern countryside of Aleppo, the damages in the camps were limited to 4 tents that were affected by the windstorm in a random camp in the Shuweiha area.

In rural Idlib, our teams responded to 4 camps, in which 21 tents were partially damaged, as rainwater leaked into them.

During this year, the Syrian Civil Defense issued a study of the needs of the camps, which was conducted in 929 camps within 30 sub-districts in 9 regions in Idlib and Aleppo governorates, including 648 camps in Idlib governorate and 281 camps in Aleppo governorate. The sample studied includes 682 regular camps and 247 random camps in northwestern Syria. , within a time frame that extended from August to November of the current year 2022.

The tragedy of displacement is exacerbating and the humanitarian needs gap is widening in the camps of northwestern Syria, with the humanitarian crisis approaching its twelfth year, and the regime forces and Russia continue to threaten the food security and livelihood of the Syrians and pursue them in their last refuge in the displacement camps, turning the humanitarian aid file into a bargaining chip for the lives of the Syrians amid difficult circumstances. At a time when epidemics and diseases threaten the lives of camp residents, especially cholera, which is still spreading rapidly.

Syria’s uprising turned into a civil war that started in 2011 that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million. More than 80% of Syrians now live in poverty, leaving much of the population dependent on humanitarian assistance.
