Japan's UN envoy on Syria aid and NKorea actions

Japan's permanent representative to the UN, Ishikane Kimihiro, said Tuesday the renewal of a resolution allowing cross-border aid in north-west Syria "is a matter of life or death for so many people."

Kimihiro said there are "intense" discussions underway and that he is "hoping" and "determined" to secure the renewal of the resolution expiring next week.

Kimihiro, who is the president of the Security Council for the month of January, also addressed questions on North Korea, saying, in his national capacity, that "the Security Council has been not really successful in speaking in one voice on the DPRK files."

"Things, I have to say, are deteriorating, so many missiles launched, that we have witnessed. So, having joined the Security Council, I tried to convey the voice of Japan or Japanese, who are facing this threatening danger coming from our neighbor and tried to make best efforts to come up with a unified Security Council," the Japanese envoy said.
