Assad regime asks for guarantees to restore relations with Turkey

The local Al-Watan newspaper, quoting well-informed sources that Syria's (the Syrian regime) position remains the same until Turkish guarantees of withdrawal from all Syrian territories are obtained before any political meeting brings the two parties together at one negotiating table.

The pro-regime newspaper's sources touched on the statement issued by the regime after the recent visit by the Iranian foreign minister to Damascus and his meeting with the head of the regime, Bashar al-Assad, and a number of his officials.

The statement stressed at the time the need for good preparation for the meetings concerned with building dialogue between Ankara and the Syrian regime. It is based on a clear agenda, titles and outputs.

The sources denied that there are any specific dates for the quadripartite meeting, pointing to the continuation of diplomatic moves led by Russia and Tehran, stressing that the doors to reaching consensus leading to the quadripartite meeting are still open.

This came after the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, announced a few days ago, during a press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdullahian, that the quadripartite meeting would be held in Moscow this week.

Cavusoglu said at the time: "The Russian side offered to hold a meeting at the technical level to prepare for the possible meeting of foreign ministers."

He added that next week (current) he would send his deputy to attend the meeting, referring to an Iranian presence as well, and stressing the possibility of holding the meeting, "when everyone deems it appropriate."
