Halting UN aid threatens lives of 4.8 million people in northern Syria: White Helmets

The Syrian Civil Defense agency warned that the living conditions  in northern Syria are getting worse with the passage of half a month since the end of the mandate to bring humanitarian aid into Syria through the Al-Hawa border crossing, due to Russian extortion of the humanitarian file.

The White Helmets stressed that this is accompanied by a heat wave that is dominating the region, the exacerbation of the population's medical and service needs, and the lack of drinking water.

She said that the continued politicalization of the humanitarian file by Russia and the Assad regime will directly affect the lives of more than 4.8 million civilians living in tragic conditions in northwestern Syria, and will deepen the gap of urgent needs for survival in light of the continued military attacks of the regime and Russia and it increases the great rift in the suffering of civilians caused by the war and exacerbated by the catastrophe of the devastating earthquake.

The rescue agency considered that the Syrians have the right to obtain humanitarian aid on the basis of the principles stipulated in international humanitarian law, reaffirming that the delivery of life-saving aid does not require permission from the UN Security Council, and there is a legal framework that gives the United Nations the right to enter aid outside the council and to ensure a rapid response. and effective for affected communities.

Expressing disappointment that the Security Council could not agree to extend its authorization of United Nations cross-border relief operations into Syria, two senior United Nations officials used Monday’s Council briefing to lay out the details of the Middle East country’s worsening humanitarian, security and economic situation.

Geir O. Pedersen, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria, said pragmatic and flexible negotiations are crucial to resume the intra-Syrian political process, facilitated by the United Nations, and reconvene the Constitutional Committee.

He shared the Secretary-General’s disappointment that cross-border relief operations through the Bab al-Hawa crossing were not extended two weeks ago.  “How are the Syrians meant to believe that some broader progress is possible, and how are they meant to be encouraged to overcome their own deep differences, if consensus on humanitarian basics among international parties is elusive,” he asked.
