Russia, Syria regime escalate in northwestern Syria, casualties reported

Syrian regime forces and key ally Russia escalated aerial and artillery bombardment on villages and towns in northwestern Syria, leaving dozens of people dead and wounded.

The rescue Syrian Civil Defense agency said that two people were killed and 19 injured, including 9 children and 6 women, due to the bombing that has been taking place in the Idlib regions since Friday morning.

The White Helmets added that a child was killed and two children from the same family were injured in a preliminary toll, as a result of an aerial bombardment by Russian warplanes that targeted the village of Jaftalek Haj Hammoud near “Jisr al-Shughur city west of Idlib.

A civilian was also killed and 2 injured, as a result of a missile strike by regime forces targeting the city of Darat Azza, west of Aleppo, after midnight.

Thursday’s strike on the Homs Military Academy killed 89 people, including 31 women and five children, is likely to lead to a renewed wave of violence in the country’s opposition-held northwest.

Idlib's front lines have been relatively calm since Russia and Turkey, who support rival sides in the country’s conflict, reached a cease-fire in March 2020, ending a three-month Russian-backed government offensive against insurgents, according to the AP.

The White Helmets had said in a previous statement that a dangerous escalation was launched by the Assad terrorist regime through violent and systematic artillery and missile attacks on northwestern Syria, on Thursday, targeting popular markets, residential neighborhoods, 4 schools, a mosque, a Syrian civil defense center, an electricity utility and a power station.
