Russian-backed UN resolution calling for ceasefire fails

A Russian-backed UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire to the fighting between Israel and Hamas has been voted down.

Five countries voted in favour, four voted against and six countries abstained. The draft needed nine votes to pass the 15 member council.

The text condemned violence against civilians and called for a release of hostages in Gaza, along with allowing humanitarian aid access but didn’t mention Hamas.

A separate draft introduced by Brazil which specifically condemns Hamas will be voted on Tuesday.
