Syrians returnees number decreased by a quarter in 2022: UNHCR

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees revealed that the number of Syrian refugees returning to the war-torn country from 5 countries in the Middle East declined by a quarter last year compared to 2022.

The UNHCR said in a statement that 37,552 Syrian refugees from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq returned to their country in 2023.

The number of Syrian refugees returning to Syria from various countries hosting refugees in 2022 reached 50,792, compared to 35,635 in 2021, 38,235 in 2020, and 94,971 in 2019, according to the UN agency.

It reported that 4,383 Syrian refugees left Jordan during the past year to return to their country, compared to 4,013 refugees in 2022, which represents an increase of 9.22%.
