Respiratory diseases widespread in northern Syria: White Helmets

The Syrian Civil Defense agency confirmed that respiratory diseases are the most widespread in the northwestern regions of Syria during the past five years.

The White Helmets stressed that the current season of acute respiratory diseases is still the highest in the past five years, such as both cases of influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness, according to reports of the Epidemic Early Warning and Response Network in northern Syria.

The rescue agency said that its teams are intensifying health care and awareness-raising work for civilians in areas and camps in northwestern Syria, to limit the spread of diseases among civilians and reduce health risks among them, especially children and the elderly who are most affected by the drop in temperatures during the winter.

It includes ambulance services and transportation to health centers, providing first aid, treatment and spray sessions according to doctors’ recommendations, and health awareness about respiratory diseases and ways to prevent them, according to the local organization.

As the conflict, now in its 13th year, reached a stalemate, the Syrian government reclaimed large swathes of lost territory with the help of its key allies in Russia and Iran in recent years.

The U.N. estimates that some 300,000 civilians died during the first decade of the uprising, while half of the pre-war population of 23 million were displaced.
