Syrian migrants suffer bad arrest conditions in Cyprus: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- As 345 Syrians migrants have been rescued on Thursday by a cruise ship near Cyprus, activists say the refugees who fled Syria are facing miserable arrest conditions by Cypriot army, appealing to the key opposition group to intervene.

last Thursday, 345 people, including 52 children, have been taken by the Cypriot Defense Ministry to a reception center near the capital Nicosia where they have shelter and medical attention, according to AP, .

Activists, through Zaman al-Wasl, called on National Coalition to intervene and to ease the humiliating circumstances Syrian migrants are facing.

In particular, activists have urged Dr. Monzer Bakhous, Coalition’s envoy to France to have hand in according to good contacts.

Salamis Cruise Lines Managing Director Kikis Vasiliou told The Associated Press that one of its cruise ships was instructed to change course and pick up the people packed aboard the smaller vessel.

The number of illegal Syrian migrants reaching Europe’s border has jumped sharply in the three-year conflict.

Hundreds of Syrians have been drawn last months, including women and children, in sea crossings aboard overcrowded and sub-standard vessels.

Syrians accounted for almost a quarter of last year’s total - 25,546 - with Eritreans (11,298), Afghans (9,021) and Albanians (9,500) making up the main other nationalities, the Telegraph said.
