Anger sparks on statements underestimate women role in New Syria

The statement of the official spokesman for the Political Administration of the Military Operations Department in Syria regarding the role of women has opened the door to debate at a time that is considered sensitive for Syria and the Syrians after the fall of the Assad regime.

Obaida Arnaout said in a press statement that "the existence of women and their biological and psychological nature are not compatible with all jobs such as the Ministry of Defense, for example."

While many activists supporting the Syrian revolution launched an attack against Arnaout's statement, others considered that what he said represents his personal opinion.

Activists considered that these issues can only be decided by the constitution, while the government is still trying to shake off the dust of 13 years of killing, destruction and displacement from Syria.

While others called for the necessity of assigning tasks related to statements and appearing in the media to specialized cadres.

Activists reviewed examples from Syrian history of Syrian women undertaking tasks that proved that they are no less than men, and perhaps even superior to them.

They highlighted their role in the Syrian revolution, reviewing many names that confronted the injustice of the deposed Assad regime.

Observers believe that respect for women's rights, minority rights and freedoms are sensitive criteria that will determine the way the international community deals with the new Syrian government.
