Anas Khattab appointed as head of intelligence in the Syrian caretaker government

The new Syrian General Command announced on Thursday the appointment of Anas Khattab as head of the General Intelligence Service, the official news agency reported.

Khattab’s appointment comes as part of a series of administrative and security amendments aimed at restructuring security institutions and enhancing their effectiveness after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Khattab, originally from the city of Jayrud in the Qalamoun region northeast of Damascus, is considered a prominent figure in the security field. Before joining the caretaker government, he held leadership positions in Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

He was responsible for security files in Idlib and head of the organization’s General Security Service. He also served as deputy to Ahmed al-Sharaa, known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani, which gave him extensive experience in planning and supervising security operations.

Khattab’s appointment is expected to contribute to strengthening the role of the General Intelligence Service and ensuring its effectiveness in confronting current security challenges, amid efforts to secure stability and build state institutions capable of managing the transitional phase.

On December 21, the Syrian caretaker government announced the appointment of Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Shaibani, born in 1987 in Abu Rasin in the countryside of Hasakah, he comes from an Arab family that goes back to the Bani Shaiban tribe. He moved with his family to Damascus, where he obtained a BA in English Language and Literature from Damascus University in 2009. Later, he obtained a master's degree in political science and international relations from Sabahattin Zaim University in Istanbul in 2022, and is currently completing his postgraduate studies in the same field.
