Zaman Al Wasl investigation team and its role in exposing war criminals

Zaman al-Wasl launched the “Search for War Criminals” initiative in mid-2020, the first of its kind by a revolutionary Syrian newspaper, to identify fugitive suspects who had posed as refugees in Europe and Canada.

This initiative has achieved success and continuity thanks to the popular interaction of Syrians, especially the victims’ families.

Over the past years, the team has received invitations to cooperate from the “Commission for International Justice and Accountability,” in addition to numerous letters from law enforcement authorities in several European countries. Meetings were also held with officials in war crimes units in the Netherlands and Germany, in addition to cooperation from European newspapers with the team.

The Belgian newspaper “De Morgen” published a report on the suspect Hussein Abu Habla, who resides in Belgium, a report that was exclusive to the investigation team.

The Dutch journalist “Melvyn Ingleby” also contacted the team and published an investigative report entitled “From a Fighter in the Forces of Assad to a Refugee in the Netherlands” on the website nrc.nl.

With the beginning of the new year, the investigation team renews its thanks to all those who contributed to providing information and data that helped uncover the suspects and prosecute them before the authorities in European countries.

The team also announces the disclosure of the identity of one of its members, lawyer Firas Haj Yheia, who holds a Master's degree in Law from the University of Limoges in France.

Haj Yheia has held several prominent positions, including Director of the Human Rights Department at the Coalition's Legal Office in Cairo and Director of the Syrian Legal Forum at the Arab Reform Initiative in Paris, in addition to his experience in the Litigation Department at the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression in Paris, in addition to his participation in specialized courses on the trial of war criminals.

In conclusion, Zaman al-Wasl confirms that by 2025, this initiative will expand to include a larger scope, with the aim of pursuing remnants of the Assad regime who may arrive in European countries as refugees, so that Zaman al-Wasl will be on the lookout for them to uncover them and bring them to justice.
