Britain: International community must support Syrian people to build democratic future

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that the international community must stand by the Syrian people on their path to building a democratic future.

The British Foreign Office announced in a statement on Saturday that Minister Lammy will head to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, to participate in a meeting on Syria on Sunday.

The statement said: "The talks will discuss steps that can be taken to support the interim administration in Syria, including mechanisms to ensure that the Assad regime is held accountable for the crimes it has committed against the Syrian people."

The statement confirmed that Britain will offer its expertise in coordinating humanitarian aid during the meeting, and Lammy will express his concern about the continuation of some conflicts in different areas of Syria.

It stressed that Britain will continue to support the political transition process led by the Syrians to establish a government that represents all spectrums in Syria.

The statement included statements by Lammy in which he said: "The international community must unite to support the Syrian people on their path to building a democratic future and a modern, pluralistic country."

The British Foreign Secretary stated that the Syrians deserve a bright and prosperous future.

Lammy is scheduled to meet with a number of his European and Arab counterparts during the meeting held in Riyadh.

Lammy had participated in a meeting on Syria held in the Italian capital Rome on January 9, attended by the foreign ministers of the United States, France, Germany and Italy. In a related context, Britain announced the allocation of 60 million pounds sterling in humanitarian aid to support Syria and Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, following the fall of the Assad regime.
