Homs: Calls for holding accountable those involved in Karm al-Zeitoun massacre on 13th anniversary

Activists and media professionals of the revolution in Homs issued a statement on the occasion of the thirteenth anniversary of the Karm al-Zeitoun neighborhood massacre, in which 19 innocent civilians, including children and women, were slaughtered with knives by Assad's gangs, most of whom lived in the same neighborhood located south of Homs.

On Sunday evening, January 26, 2012, the militias of the deposed regime and its thugs committed a horrific massacre against civilians, most of whom were women and children, who were all slaughtered with knives and thrown in the street - according to the "Syrian League for the Defense of Human Rights" and several activists at the time.

According to the information received at the time, some of the bodies bore signs of mutilation resulting from knives that the perpetrators used to write sectarian phrases on the bodies, and most of the women and young girls (some of whom were no more than 8 years old) were subjected to gang rape before being killed by slaughtering and stabbing with knives, according to the League's confirmation.

* They are not just numbers

Activists and media professionals of the revolution said in a statement received by Zaman al-Wasl that dealing with these crimes as passing events or belittling them undermines the chances of building a peaceful future and leaves a deep wound in the conscience of free Syrians.

The statement added that "our moral and humanitarian duty requires us to raise our voices for the victims of the Karm al-Zeitoun massacre and other massacres and to show that we will not contribute to or allow their cause to be erased."

The statement stressed that the victims of the Karm al-Zeitoun massacre are not just numbers, but innocent souls who had the right to live in dignity and peace.

* Prolonging the injustice

The signatories of the statement urged every Syrian who seeks civil peace to seriously demand that the criminals be held accountable and immediately handed over to justice, and they added: "This is not just a demand, but rather a moral and humanitarian duty for the sake of a Syria where justice and peace prevail, and we must be a voice for the victims who cannot make their voices heard today."

The statement concluded that ignoring major crimes under the pretext of peace does not bring peace, but rather prolongs injustice.

Homs Governorate is considered one of the governorates most exposed to massacres at the hands of the regime forces and its militias, which claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians, as opponents have accused the elements of the "National Defense", Iranian militias, and the Lebanese Hezbollah of committing them.

* More than 151 massacres

An old statistic on the number of massacres committed by the mercenaries of the Assad regime and its army revealed that there were more than 151 massacres that took place in Homs alone during the first 19 months of the Syrian revolution.

The first massacre was committed by the mercenaries of the "National Defense" in the "Karm al-Zeitoun" neighborhood, then the major massacres followed, starting with Houla, which claimed the lives of 108 civilians, passing through the "Deir Baalba" neighborhood, whose victims were estimated in the dozens, and the "Basatin al-Hasawiya" massacre (whose victims were more than 150 civilians), despite the fact that it was an area that did not witness any peaceful or armed revolutionary activity.
