Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa arrives in Saudi Arabia in first foreign trip

Syria’s newly-appointed President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, landed in Saudi Arabia on Sunday in his first official visit abroad since his appointment as the country’s transitional president.

Earlier on Sunday, Syrian news agency, SANA, posted a picture of al-Sharaa accompanied by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani en route to the Kingdom on its account on X.

Al-Sharaa is expected to hold talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and MBS congratulated al-Sharaa on Thursday for his appointment as Syria’s transitional president, a day after Syria’s new authorities announced that al-Sharaa, who took power following Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in December, had been named interim president and tasked with forming a transitional legislature.

Last month, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan visited Damascus, where he met al-Sharaa. Prince Faisal said Riyadh was seeking to help Syria’s new authorities secure the lifting of international sanctions.

He added that Saudi Arabia was standing by Syria, pointing to “the importance of accelerating the lifting and freezing of all sanctions.”

Last month, al-Shaibani made his first official trip abroad when he visited Saudi Arabia, which has been providing humanitarian aid to the country

Speaking to Al Arabiya in December, al-Sharaa said that the Kingdom “will certainly have a large role in Syria’s future,” pointing to “a big investment opportunity for all neighboring countries.”

He mentioned that he was born in Saudi Arabia, where his father worked at the time, and lived there for the first few years of his life.
