The army continues military operation to clear border of Lebanese drug gangs

The Syrian-Lebanese border witnessed a mutual military escalation on Sunday, as the Syrian army targeted border points with Lebanon in the Homs countryside with artillery shells. The Syrian Ministry of Defense also launched an attack on pro-Iranian militias in the border area at the Matraba crossing in the Qusayr countryside, west of Homs Governorate, central Syria.

In a field development, Hezbollah elements left their positions and fled after violent clashes with the Syrian army in the border area, while the Military Operations Department of the Syrian Ministry of Defense continues combing operations along the border with Lebanon, stressing that it will continue to pursue Hezbollah elements and drug smuggling gangs.

For its part, the Lebanese army confirmed that it continues to respond with appropriate weapons to the firing of shells from Syria on Lebanese areas on the eastern border. It added that it is implementing exceptional security measures along the eastern border, including establishing observation points and conducting patrols to protect security in the area.

These developments come at a sensitive time, amid escalating tensions between the various parties in the border area.
