A source in the Central Bank of Syria said on Friday that the amount transferred from Russia to Syria is only 300 billion Syrian pounds, denying the accuracy of the news circulated about larger numbers in hard currency.
The source explained to the Syrian agency that this amount is the right of Syria and the Syrian people, and is part of a contract that had been signed between the ousted regime and Russia, and was supposed to arrive before the end of last year.
According to SANA, the contract stipulates another payment that will be sent at a later time, and may be for an amount greater than the current amount.
The ousted regime was paying Russia the price of the Syrian money printed in hard currency directly from the palace treasury, without the intervention of the Central Bank of Syria. Since the beginning of the revolution and the decline in the value of the Syrian pound, it has relied on printing currency in Syria without it having any real value.
