Unknown fate of French girl child placed in Syrian orphanage in 2020: Document

Documents obtained by Zaman al-Wasl revealed that in 2020, the Syrian authorities found a two-year-old French toddler named Maria Abdullah Basira near a garbage container in the northeastern city of Raqqa, and she was then placed in an orphanage.

According to official documents issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Khadija Ahmed al-Aqraa took the child girl and exploited her in begging in Raqqa and then Damascus, before she was arrested and imprisoned, and a new chapter in the child's suffering began.

The child was transferred to SOS Children's Villages by a decision from the General Intelligence - Branch 251 in 2020, with strict supervision imposed on her situation and preventing the leaking of any information related to her.

The documents indicate that the child's parents were previously detained by the regime, which led to her being left alone in the street. Her identity was identified after Khadija al-Aqraa was arrested while begging while carrying the child's passport.

The Ministry of Social Affairs, in coordination with the intelligence, confirmed that the child is of French origin, and that her father holds French citizenship.

The fate of Maria is still unknown, the child who moved from the cold sidewalks to begging and then to an orphanage, so her story remains open to unknown possibilities.
