Lebanon: Syrian detainees' hunger strike enters 11th day

At least 125 Syrian detainees in Roumieh prison in Lebanon continue their hunger strike for the eleventh consecutive day, in protest against the delay in implementing the announced agreement between the Syrian and Lebanese governments regarding the return of detainees.

According to sources inside the prison, the suffering of the hunger strikers is worsening, as they complain of deteriorating health conditions, especially among the elderly and those with chronic diseases, in light of the continued mistreatment of the medical staff inside the prison’s medical center. Sources confirmed that the response to emergency cases is very slow, which increases the seriousness of the detainees’ health conditions.

For its part, a delegation from the International Red Cross visited the detainees today, as it is working on preparing a report on their health and humanitarian conditions, while no official communication has been issued by any Syrian or Lebanese government official so far, despite the ongoing crisis and the escalation of the detainees’ demands.

The detainees renew their basic demands, which are:

1. Implementing the announced agreement between the two countries to return all Syrian detainees in Lebanon.

2. Appointing a high-level government official to follow up on the implementation of the agreement and ensure the acceleration of release procedures.

Amid this escalation, solidarity campaigns are increasing on social media under the hashtags #Save_Syrian_Detainees_in_Lebanon and #BeTheirVoice, in an attempt to pressure the official authorities to take action and end the suffering of the strikers.
