Germany: 133 Syrian refugees receive financial support to facilitate home return

The German Federal Government has provided financial support to 133 Syrian refugees who have decided to return to their country voluntarily.

The return assistance programme was launched in January 2025 to support Syrian refugees living in Germany who wish to return to their war-torn homeland, especially those who do not have enough money.

"As of February 16, around 40 people have left via this programme, which has been organised by the German Migration and Refugee Agency (BAMF) since January 13, 2025 within the framework of a programme between the Federal Government and the Länder," a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior told the Welt newspaper.

The programme provides financial and organisational support to migrants who do not have sufficient resources to return to their home country or to a third country willing to accept them.

The support includes 200 euros per adult and 100 euros for minors, as well as additional medical costs of up to 2,000 euros, as well as financial assistance starting at 1,000 euros for adults and 500 euros for children or adolescents.

Maximum €4,000

Despite this assistance, many Syrians choose to remain in Germany.

In 2024, 85 voluntary journeys to Syria were supported through local government programs, and since the beginning of 2025, there have been 8 cases, bringing the total number of returns with federal government support to 133 people. However, these figures only represent cases where the states have applied for costs to be covered through the federal government program.

According to the Foreigners Register, around 975,061 Syrian citizens were living in Germany on 31 December 2024. Of these, 10,231 were obliged to leave, of whom 9,156 were under temporary protection.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior is working on solutions to enable Syrians to make short journeys back to their country without losing their refugee status.
