Government lifts travel ban on more than 5 million Syrians

The Syrian Ministry of Interior cancelled today, Sunday, all travel ban notices issued by the ousted Assad regime, which included requests for arrest, review, notification, and failure to perform compulsory and reserve service.

The ministry's statement indicated that these requests are related to the leadership of the army and armed forces, the divisions and branches of the security services, the National Security Office, and the regional leadership of the defunct Baath Party, which number 5.16 million cases, and all of them are notices issued against citizens of the Syrian Arab Republic during the time of the ousted regime.

The decision recommended that the Immigration and Passports Department be tasked with implementing the content of this decision.

Features of the New Syria

The newspaper "Zaman al-Wasl" said in a post on its accounts that the Minister of Interior responded to what the newspaper published several times, which reflects a glimmer of hope in the features of the new Syria. The newspaper added that it highlighted the suffering of thousands of Syrians due to the travel ban, as some of them found themselves stuck inside the country after their return, unable to leave again, while others refrained from visiting their families for fear of not being able to return to their places of residence, which would cause them to lose their jobs and stability.

It pointed out that the demand included lifting the travel ban on 800,000 Syrians, so the decision to lift it on 5 million citizens came in an unprecedented positive step.

Zaman Al-Wasl had launched a search engine for those banned from travel, so that citizens could correct their status before arriving or leaving Syria. The search engine included more than 800,000 names that were restricted using the first name, surname and father.

A sound decision

Many Syrians expressed their joy and welcome on social media at the news of lifting the travel ban, highlighting how it is a major obstacle. Others expressed their surprise at the number of people on the lists.
Some described this decision as correct, indicating the new government's openness towards the interests of the Syrian people and the achievement of their just demands in the new Syria.

Lawyer Jamal Nuwaiser said: "This decision ends the suffering of millions of Syrians whose lives have been affected by these restrictions for many years, and opens the way for many to regain freedom of movement and travel without legal obstacles."

Samir Daboul demanded that the decision include the rest of the ministries because there is - as he said - a travel ban from the Ministry of Education, for example.

Abu Anas Ahmed commented: After years of putting my name on the lists of those banned from leaving Syria under the decision of the notorious terrorism court against me and the millions of sons of this honorable country, praise be to God who removed the harm from us and healed us."
