Saudi Arabia, Ukraine discuss efforts to achieve peace

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed efforts made to achieve peace in the war-torn country, according to a statement issued Tuesday after their meeting.

The statement, carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), said the Kingdom hopes the Ukrainian crisis will end in line with international law and the United Nations Charter, including respecting the principles of sovereignty and the internationally recognized borders.

“The two sides reviewed the efforts exerted in order to achieve a lasting, just and comprehensive peace in Ukraine,” SPA reported.

Ukraine for its part expressed its appreciation for the Kingdom’s in this regard with the Ukrainian delegation thanking Saudi Arabia for the aid it has offered Kyiv.

MBS welcomed Zelenskyy in Jeddah ahead of Ukraine-US talks that began on Tuesday in the coastal city.

The talks aim to mend ties and assess whether Ukraine is willing to make concessions under US President Donald Trump’s push to end Russia’s war with Ukraine swiftly.

The key talks come after a stunning clash at the White House last month between Trump and Zelenskyy. They follow US-Russia talks that the Saudi capital, Riyadh, hosted last month.

Economic cooperation

In addition to tackling the political situation, both sides also touched on means of economic cooperation and underscored the need to develop the volume of trade as well as to address challenges facing the development of business relations.

The Saudi and Ukrainian sides “affirmed their determination to enhance investment relations by establishing promising investment and economic partnerships in sectors that are a priority for both countries including energy, food industries and infrastructure,” the statement said.

The two sides added that they are looking forward to exploring joint cooperation opportunities in the areas of oil, gas and their derivatives, and petrochemicals.
