Syria’s al-Sharaa forms a national security council: Statement

Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa has formed a national security council, the Syrian presidency says.

The statement clarified that the new council will be chaired by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, and will include the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Interior, in addition to the Director of General Intelligence, as well as advisory and technical positions appointed by the President based on criteria of competence and experience.

The text of the presidential decree reads: "Based on the powers granted to the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, and based on the supreme national interest, and out of a desire to strengthen national security and respond to security and political challenges in the coming period, the President of the Republic decides to form a National Security Council headed by the President of the Republic."

According to the decree, the council will meet periodically or as necessary, upon the invitation of the President of the Republic. Decisions related to national security and internal and external challenges will be made in consultation among the members. The statement also indicated that the council's tasks and working mechanisms will be determined in accordance with presidential directives, ensuring effective coordination between the various agencies and institutions involved.

The announcement of the council's formation comes amid rapid security developments, particularly after the recent events on the Syrian coast in recent days.
