Makedonia: 9 arrested for smuggling migrants, 37 Syrians discovered


Macedonian Interior Ministry discovered an organized criminal group in the country that is part of an international organized criminal network involved in activities with migrant smuggling.

Nine people were detained during the police action, during which searches were performed in Skopje, Kumanovo and the village of Vaksince, where some members of the criminal group lived or stayed. A total of 37 illegal immigrants from Syria were found in Vaksince.

Migrants were paying EUR 1,500 for transit through Macedonia and the transfers of the money from a criminal group in Greece to Macedonia and Serbia were conducted through Western Union.

(Independent-MK)-  Macedonian Interior Ministry discovered an organized criminal group in the country that is part of an international organized criminal network involved in activities with migrant smuggling.

 Interior Minister Gordana Jankuloska informed at Monday’s press conference that criminal charges will be brought against 13 persons for criminal acts "organizing of group and enticing of people trafficking, child trafficking and migrant smuggling" and "people smuggling ". The detained smugglers are aged 22 to 40 and are from Skopje, Kumanovo and the villages of Lojane, Vaksince and Bansko, near Strumica.

Minister Jankulovska explained that three people from Skopje aged 34 to 40, in order to obtain unlawful gains and led by a person from Pakistan, smuggled migrants from Greece into the country through illegal crossings near Gevgelija for longer period of time in cooperation with persons of criminal gang.

The immigrants are from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan and other countries in the Middle East and Far East.

The Pakistani citizen was giving instructions to members of the criminal group for safe acceptance and the route for their movement and whether or not there are police patrols. Thus, "the organized column" i.e. the cargo vehicle with immigrants and street were driving toward Kumanovo via Valandovo, Strumica, Stip and Sveti Nikole.
