Two US Senators call for easing sanctions on Syria: Targeted regime no longer exists

US Senators Elizabeth Warren and Joe Wilson sent a joint letter to the US Secretary of State on Friday, calling for a review of the sanctions imposed on Syria, asserting that they are undermining US national security objectives and hindering reconstruction efforts.

The two senators noted in their letter that the sanctions "targeted a regime that no longer exists," stressing that they continue to restrict private sector activity and hinder the economic exchanges necessary for large-scale reconstruction.

Warren and Wilson called on the US Departments of State and Treasury to provide the new Syrian authorities with a clear roadmap outlining the steps that must be taken to ease the sanctions.

They considered that "swift action could be crucial to avoid harming US interests and would help the Syrian people build a better future after years of repressive rule."
