Some residents of the Syrian coastal region have thanked Fadi Saqr, the former commander of the National Defense Militia and one of the most prominent defendants accused of committing war crimes. Saqr is now being presented as the "supervisor of the Civil Peace Committee," after years of killing and abuse.
According to reports, Saqr contributed to the release of hundreds of former regime members and officers from prison, returning them to the "homeland" and their families, as if nothing had happened.
Sources within the so-called "Civil Peace Committee" confirmed that "work is ongoing to release a large number of Assad's men, as part of what it describes as 'establishing civil peace.'"
Local activists have questioned the nature of the "peace" forged by war criminals? What kind of justice would restore officers to their positions while leaving victims in their graves?
